Americano coffee is a shot of espresso, combined with hot water.  The hot
water dilutes the expresso, and makes something similar to drip coffee, or
regular coffee, as American's are used it.  

It's called the Americano because it was made for soldiers in WWII when they
were in Europe, and wanted a coffee at a European cafe which didn't have an
American style drop coffee maker.
