I now think that what happens, is that I check so often, that  sometimes there
haven't been any new messages since the last time I was here.  To see
anything, I need to click on [Show All Messages]. 

It seems to me that the entire message area is not shown at all, unless I've
either clicked on SHOW ALL MESSAGES, or there are one or more new messages to
see.
