There were a number of other kinda networks with proprietary software that didn't make it. North America was more fertile soil for something like that to catch root and prosper, the way I remember it it was like a boom ... an explosion as soon as the hardware became available. People were queuing in stores to get a computer, a modem and get going ... also schools ... also a base on Antarctica. Very odd, it never took of in the french speaking world. There were some competing softwares from French manufacturers but France as a whole was geared towards its official "Minitel" system which was going to become available for free to the public at large ... After several years Minitel declined, the francophone softwares had not been further developed and "Using an Americam/Canadian product?" .... 'Mon dieu ... non svp'.
