Well it helped! I switched to the $TERM=putty-256color settings we discussed
before, and now all is well!

 VA> It may be lost in so many layers you use... I'd suggest to check if
 VA> putty and local console use same/different TERM.

Is is 'xterm' in my local konsole, and was 'linux' but now 'putty-256color' in
my putty terminal.
