I'm the same way.  Had to do all the book work for class, but I really
learned doing everything in the hands-on labs in school and then going home
and trying it all again there either via packet tracer or some cheap stuff I
got on ebay or kijiji.

Yup, some of the most frustrating and rewarding moments is when everything
"should" work but doesn't & then you figure out why it didn't.
