I've installed Claws Mail (fork of Sylpheed), which has the same feature. It's
not really proper FTN style quoting though. For the first reply level it's
fine, but then it gets messy

Until there is no dedicated plugin for FTN quotes, smartquote is the best
option (IMHO).
