Can't beat this kind of family entertainment, eh boys? Gotta love it ;-)
Hadron points out what I was thinking; it is dependent upon you definition
of burning, which actually (IMHO) a flawed application of the word in this
case, since 'burn' means the process of combustion who's catalyst is oxygen,
heat and fuel. A firefighter will tell you that removing any one of these
three elements will prevent combustion. Rewritable disks, as Hadron touched
on, are specialized media, and the process is accomplished by the application
of a laser at power levels which smooth out the pits and valleys on the disk
effectively "erasing" the disk. It dosen't really erase it, but simply makes
the disk unreadable until the process is repeated to apply a new pattern of
pits and valleys.
In conclusion:
A Writable disk (cd or dvd) is, indeed, burned, since the laser provides
heat, the process takes place in the prescense of oxygen, and the
surface of the disk is consumed in the process, as it was designed to
do, providing fuel. This process permanently imprints data on the disk.
A Re-Writable disk (cd or dvd) is *not* burned in the strictest sense because
while the laser provides heat, and the process takes place in the prescense
of oxygen, The Re-Writable media is specifically designed *not* to be consumed
in the process, denying fuel. More accurately, the disk is modified by the
application of heat according to the laws of thermodynamics. Or, well, I guess
you could say, it gets melted. A very little bit, but melted nonetheless.
It's a heck of a lot shorter. But not so much fun :-)

Mr. Science geek here agrees with you ;-)
