No, actually that was Larry Ellison's idea, the Internet Appliance.
And now Google with their "office" applications. Why install Office if
you can just use Google's servers?

I can't see why a company that sells operating systems would ever be
in the business of making an operating system irrelevant and just have
a VT100, which is essentially what a browser is.

Nope, I have to disagree. In fact, much of the latest DotNet framework
3.0 stuff (xaml  and WPF in particular) appear designed to make
creating Windows apps (now called Installed apps) easier to install
and maintain. That is a direct response to the ease of running browser
based apps.
