I found I was stuck with the same problem several years ago, when I
moved to linux. I did not use a virtual machine, but eventually
concluded that for a simple life I would have to ultimately sacrifice
TP and find something else.
I began with thunderbird then, and still use it. Thunderbird is being
very actively developed and supported, - very different to TP as you
know. It is not that close to TP functionality, but at least it is not
woven into explorer. I have found useful ways to do most of what I had
got used to in TP.
Initially I felt that I liked TP so much that I delayed a full move to
linux. Looking back though, I would sacrifice a great deal more than
TP to get the stability and freedom the linux provides.
Good luck with your decisions!
