Turnpike does have some very loyal users. Unfortunately development has
now been stopped, other than for bug-fixes. One of the problems with
using Turnpike under Linux is that it's not a program that would appeal
to typical Linux users. The Linux way is usually to have one tool for
one job, which usually means separate news and mail clients - although
there are exceptions. Turnpike handles both, and makes a better job of
each than any other Linux (or Windows) mail or news client that I know
of. It's why there are people who will seriously consider using a VM to
run it, because the alternative is to run one or possibly two real
machines. We will also pay for Turnpike licenses in preference to using
free or open-source programs.
Briefly the advantages of Turnpike that it is virtually bombproof, I
have never lost any data using it. It's immune to malware, I'm happy to
allow completely naive users loose with it, while I prefer to restrict
the use of other Windows software to people with at least some training.
And even though development has stopped there is still some support
available.
I got this in the support newsgroup:

I don't have any experience of the Wine software, but TP6 Connect is
very similar to TP5 which others have said does run.
TP6 certainly did run under NT4WS when I last checked. I expect the
main downside to running it in a VM is that RAM will have to be
dedicated to it & TP Explorer can be a large user of RAM, unless you
keep your mail very carefully organised. That said, the convenience of
perhaps being able to run other pieces of software under the NT4WS when
required might also weigh in the balance. You'll have to have a licence
for your NT, of course.
