My Gigabyte wireless nic wouldn't run under linux (any flavour) so I did
some research and found that Netgear's WG311 was supported so I bought
one. First snag, they're now on version 3 and it was version one that
was supported.
In Mandriva the card was detected, it offered to use ndiswrapper, I used
a driver off the CD and it just worked. No problems at all.
Not so in ubuntu 6.10, the card was there in the PCI bus but not recognized.
Found this very helpful link
http://www.jimbo7.com/wiki/index.php?title=WG311v3
and followed it up to the WPA-PSK bit, which doesn't work at all with
ubuntu.
Now the card is seen, in Sytem>Netwoking the wireless card is shown, the
green light blinks but it just won't seem to get an IP from the wireless
server.
I feel that I am 'so near yet so far' from cracking this so any advice
gratefully received. wpasupplicant (which I presume = the debian
wpa_supplicant) is loaded by the way. Tried turning off all security on
the router and having no passkey in 'Networking' but still no joy.
Forgot to say that Wireless Assistant 'sees' and correctly identifies
the SSID.
Derek.
