Probably a couple of reasons. I am a long-time Thunderbird user.
Before that, I primarily used Pine. I switch between a number of
different computers, and have thunderbird installed on my windows
laptop and on the USB drive I carry around.
I suppose the main reason, however, is that I am still in the process
of really moving to mutt full-time, although I am using it more and
more and only fire up thunderbird about once a week. I still do not
have my .mailcap the way I want it, so some mail is just easier to
read in tbird.
The main drivers for mutt are abook and it works much better than
anything else when using my Nokia 770.
The main driver for Tbird is that it works nicely on a USB drive that
I can plug into a friends' computer or kiosk and i do not have to
setup an MTA.
I do everything in IMAP, because I like to be able to switch, just for
the fun of it. Because of that, I try to be mail client agnostic so
that when I switch, I can do it painlessly.
Obviously, the reasons and uses are a bit chaotic, but the reality is
that mutt is my mail client about 90% or more of the time now.
