Or better still in some ways, replace "make install" with checkinstall,
a useful script which will build a .deb package from the newly compiled
source code. The user can then install the new package using dpkg -i,
or not if they prefer not to do so.
Of course, before getting to that point, the user will need to install
the needed development tools (compiler, libraries etc) by installing
the meta-package build-essential, and also checkinstall itself.
sudo aptitude install build-essential
sudo aptitude install checkinstall
