Thanks. It's a good idea but I'm a bit doubtful about it. The problem
(as you know) is that TP consist of two different parts. "Turnpike
Connect" is the part that connects to news/mail servers, downloads the
messages, and files them in the central database. I'm pretty sure that
this will run under Wine without any great difficulties.
The other part is "Turnpike Explorer" which is a Windows Explorer shell
extension. Essentially it's a plug-in for Windows Explorer. It uses
Explorer to handle displaying the data. Getting that running under Wine
is not going to be a trivial exercise, even if the Wine team were
interested in tackling it. I don't think that TP is worth the
considerable effort required, but if they have already done it for
another purpose TP might be able to piggyback on that effort.
I think that the answer, if there is one, will be a native Linux client
that supports the multi-window views that Turnpike uses. I've had to
give some more thought to just what I want in a TP replacement. It comes
down to two different requirements, one back-end and one front-end.
The back-end requirement is for a simple system that can collect
messages using at least NNTP and POP3 protocols. It has to be stable and
reliable, two things that are easier to do in Linux than Windows. It
should meet all of the requirements of GNKSA.
The front-end requirement is for a display program that is able to use
full-screen windows for either a message or the group/folder/thread
structure that the message is taken from. Being able to open multiple
windows simultaneously is not essential but I have found it useful.
If anyone knows of any native Linux news or mail clients that support
multiple windows I'd like to give them a try.
