I'm stuck with the same problem, the excellent Canon 8400F scanner.
But I see the OS just as part of the solution/problem and dual boot with
Windows.
Canon is a company that has an outspoken anti-Linux policy.
They have numerous times been asked to support the development of
drivers but are not willing to help.
As a result hardly any Canon scanners work in Linux, next time better
vote with your money and spend it on a brand with more clue.
