Whilst perusing Usenet on 7 Mar 2007 13:16:13 GMT, I read these words

I haven't either. It looks similar to the program I used
under Win, 'Tag 'n Rename'. That one lets you re-write
any/all of the ID tags associated with mp3 audio files
and I've just discovered it can handle ogg files as well,
so I'll tidy them in that and try copying them again.
(After re-writing the ID tags on 7,000 mp3s,
I'm probably quicker doing it that way)

I deleted them earlier this afternoon !

AFAIR, it said 'root'

Wondering if that's part of the problem.
I've been trying to move /home to a different
partition from root and it may have screwed
things up somewhat whilst copying the files
over.

Transferred them via a USB memory stick this
time without any problems and can now work
with them in Easy Tag but not in Audio Tag Tool,
so *that* one's now off the system !
Installed 'Amarok' and got it working with the
ogg files then updated it to play mp3s. So I
don't need to convert any more of my existing
collection.
Getting there !
