I don't know about Vista, but with previous versions of Windows you can
install Linux on top of Windows (provided you partitioned the disk to
leave room for Linux).  The Windows installer used to allow you to
manually partition your disk yourself and select which partitions you
used for Windows.  Once Windows is installed you set up the free space
on the disk using the Linux partition manager and install windows.  The
last thing is to add Windows as a second os in grub or lilo.  Most of
the installers for Linux will detect the windows os on the disk and do
this for you automagicly.
