sorry dont know

> Which is the safer to use?

safer in terms of security - probably similar (very good)
in terms of upgrade complications - probably each similar - normal
package updates similar but probably avoid th eupgrade between
versions, do that with a reinstall. If mint is very well organised it
would work better for distro version upgrades, but I would not hold my
breath.

> How easy is it to do manually what they do to Ubuntu?

very easy after you become a bit experienced. I am a 3 year end user
of linux and I would not consider trying very hard to do it manually.
I use automatix or easy ubuntu.
I am told it is very easy anyway to follow some information on the
ubuntu sites to do the same things, and you have better chance to
understand what is going on then.

> In simple terms, what are the aims of Automatix2

easy peasy find and install various codecs for the non open source
requirements - play mp3, commercial dvds, Flash, etc etc

 > and Mint?

I think similar, also very pretty visual arrangement.

> Who should go for which?

Easy questions last eh?
My own approach is to initially go for a most popular 'standard'
(k)ubuntu and go from there. However, for some multimedia you will
soon need codecs, which are easily dealt with (ubuntu forums and
searches etc). It really is your choice. It is an initial culture
shock when moving from winworld, that so much choice exists, and most
choices are *perfectly* acceptable, with no dire consequences. Most
can be tried easily via live CDs. Eat your heart out Vista!

If you want a more instant pre configured approach, and a slightly
smaller user base (note1) then mint is a good offering.

note1:
although mint is not identical with ubuntu, it is very close and based
on it, so almost all ubuntu comments will apply.
