I have been running linux for about a year, now. However, I'm still a
newbie. Here's the situation. I'm currently running Ubuntu 5.06 LTS as
my main linux system. Because of the work that I do, I must still use
Windows XP. I also like to look at newer releases (i.e. Ubuntu 6.10,
etc). So, I set up my system this way:
hda is dedicated to Windows XP
hdb1 is my Ubuntu 6.06 LTS system
hdb2 is my Ubuntu 6.06 swap file
hdb3 is my Ubuntu 6.10 system
hdb4 is my Ubuntu 6.10 swap file
Because the os's were installed (time wise) in that order, grub's
menu.lst file and associated code is located on hdb3. As I'm sure some
of you are chuckling already (you know what's coming), I find that
whenever there are kernel updates to 6.06, Ubuntu updates the menu.lst
on hdb1. When there are kernel updates to 6.10, the menu.lst on hdb3
gets updated.
Since the 6.10 system was the last one installed, that is the one that
is used when I boot my machine. Therefore, I have to be really careful
to update the menu.lst on hdb3 when something changes on hdb1.
I want to cause grub to actually look on hdb1 (as it's my key system)
for the grub files. I may want to load a future version of Ubuntu in
hdb3. I have read the man pages for grub-install and grub-set-defaults
and I'm confused.
Do I have to do a complete grub-install (the grub files are already
loaded on hdb1 & hdb3 from previous installs)?
Or is there an easier way to cause grub to look at hdb1 instead of hdb3?
I assume that there is something loaded into the MBR that tells grub to
look in a specific place. I'm sure this is simple, it just doesn't seem
so, now.
Thanks for your patience...
Dick
