Mint is a 'version' or enhancement of Ubuntu.

Feisty supposedly has more opportunity to add proprietary things like
codecs than earlier versions. Were you able to do that?

You haven't said what is your experience with computers in general, what
kinds of activities you want to be doing.
Your headers say that you are using the Win newsreader Turnpike 6.05,
which I'm totally unfamiliar with; and you say you have seen/tried the
latest Mint and alpha Feisty, which means that you are much more 'edgy'
[bleeding edge] than the average user.
If you are happy with Feisty, that seems like a good choice. If you are
just 'experimenting' with Ubuntu, I think I would have done it somewhat
less edgy and used Edgy :-) Ub 6.10 and then Easy Ubuntu, but
Automatix2 is another popular way to get things. Maybe you can do it
with Feisty as well.
