Spot on. I've got Verizon DSL, and I was actually quite suprised, no, make
that astonished, that the helpdesk actually knew what Linux was. DSL, is
DSL unless you actually need the "software" for windows. I do however recommend
putting a router inbetween the DSL modem and the computer. This is just basic
good sense as it makes it very simple to mask your computers IP address using
the address of the router instead. To the outside world, the router *is* your
computer, and it works well as a hardware fire wall. Simple ethernet routers
are like, 30 bucks. Anyway, unlike the old days, any modern distro worth
running will detect the ethernet DSL connection automatically and set up the
connection for you, in this case, until you decide to change it. It will even
reestablish the setup and connection if you need to disconnect the ethernet
cable
from the computer for some reason. One bit of advice: *do not*, let me repeat
that: _DO NOT_ use the DSL modem USB connection for service. It is dial-up
slow,
and very pain-in-the-ass to get working. I believe it *does* need the software
to work, which means you do need windows.

Best regards,

Mateus
