Thank you for the suggestion.  Unfortunately, it did not work for me.
After running apt-get with --reinstall, I got the following output:

Preparing to replace automake1.9 1.9.6-1 (using

So, it still appears to be 1.4 when run with --version, and does not
understand the '-h' switch.  I suppose I could download a tarball and
compile the program myself, but I like the fact that this server has
been so stable (a prolonged power outage is the only reason it has not
been up for 260 days straight) and attribute a good part of that to me
not mucking about beyond the contrib repositories.

I do not know enough about automake, but it confuses me that it says
1.9 is installed, and the system only presents 1.4.  Until now, I
never had a problem with it and did not touch it.
