I got a similar message after the last kernel update. The 78xx version
is the one included in the restricted modules package. My understanding
is that the driver must match the kernel module. I don't do anything
spectacular on my system so I reinstalled the drivers from repos (don't
recall the actual package names) and went with the older modules.
You may also want to check out the nvidia drivers for the beryl project.
I tried it a while back, but decided the eye candy wasn't for me.

I just had a thought about your monitor woes... Is your card dual head
and if so have you tried hooking the monitor to the other output?
