Try this:
*/5 * * * * killall -USR1 xfdesktop >/dev/null 2>&1
That sends all output from the command to /dev/null, so cron won't email you
anything. You could also set cron to not email anything, but as you start
using cron for more and more, you'll almost definitely run into situations
where you WANT cron to alert you to problems.
>/dev/null 2>&1 tells the shell to send all standard input to /dev/null, and
to interleave standard error messages there, too. You could also use
just ">/dev/null," which would discard all of the standard input, but would
let error messages still be sent. For the simple command you are running,
though, you probably won't have to worry about any errors.
