I guess the file doesn't have the "execute" permission set so it can't
be executed. Gnome then tried to find an application to open it with and
gave up when it didn't find one.

I don't use OO so I can't comment this but it sounds like a bug.

Maybe you'll like Thunderbird. Unfortunately its description doesn't
mention "newsgroup" or "usenet".

"Add/Remove" list only a few of the available packages. Use "System →
Administration → Synaptic Package Manager" so see all of them. IMHO
there should be a button or something in add/remove to start synaptic
(and AFAIR there used to be one in earlier versions).
