Legacy or (u)efi?  I haven't checked out slackware's grub.  On the one legacy
boot (32-bit grub) I can't get penguins to work either.  :-/

Yes.  The three boots that work, including the laptop, I am doing uefi boots
with 64-bit grub.  It took some doing but was worth the effort especially on
this particular machine.
