   There were some Dell firmware updates since then, and I have not seen   
   this behavior again.   
      
   And the original behavior was a bit weirder than I initially noticed,   
   the laptop could activate the network interface if the whole system had   
   been off and disconnected from mains for several hours and I then   
   started it by switching on the power at the mains adapter.   
      
   I'd file it under weird incompatibility between some Dell firmware   
   versions and some kernel versions, unless it occurs again.
