      * What led up to the situation?   
   	machine is a server on commodity hardware. it runs some vms, and runs   
   prometheus/node-exporter/grafana.   
      * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or   
        ineffective)?   
   	the machine is left on like a server for many days at a time.   
      * What was the outcome of this action?   
   	after some days, the machine locks up. i can't login over ssh and the console   
   is unusable. there are many reports of hung tasks in the kernel that appear to   
   be blocked on mutex acquisition.   
      * What outcome did you expect instead?   
   	no hang.
