Text based is what is needed. My BBS runs on a server where there is no xorg or
 the like installed so in that situation text based is essential.

A GUI is not a bad thing also. If there was a GUI I would run that too, where I
 can.

Linux native. There are things like dosemu that can be used to run DOS based
software but it's full of stuff that works kinda/sorta/mostly.
