I cheated and started in the tv series first. The I skimmed  
through the books to find the parts that illuminated "more to  
the story".

The dialog in the books was quite fine, I thought.  The scene  
where the dwarf kills his father sitting on the loo-throne was  
quite an extended scene in the book. In the tv series, it was  
quite short.
