Hello all.

ML> I did a little exploring again during my lunch break. I went to the
ML> Beringer web site and saw their S16 digital snake. It said the
ML> following in regards to "stand alone" mode - i.e. Analog console:

ML> CUT

ML> Although the S16 was initially designed for use with our flagship
ML> X32 digital console, any mixing board with AES50 networking
ML> capability can tap into the S16's powerful feature set. So if you
ML> happen to work on an analog mixing board occasionally, you could use
ML> two pairs of S16 and ADA8000 to form a high-performance, lightweight
ML> 16 x 16 digital snake, all on one CAT5 connection, keeping the
ML> preamp remote control functionality.

RW> SOunds interesting, i might just explore that! Small rack
RW> to sit on splitter rack with these would be just waht the
RW> doctor ordered for use with my mci. That would also fit
RW> well if I decided to go Yamaha, or Behringer for
RW> another digital console in the truck. I've enough
RW> connections for a second console, which has often been done
RW> in the life of this truck, and already know that when second large
RW> format console is added to truck it's gonna be a digi, so far I've
RW> been leaning Yamaha, but this would play well
RW> with my existing system. Looks like i need to call my
RW> favorite friendly Behringer dealer on this one. Their
RW> ada8000 is already part of my ops for less than truck gigs.
RW> This would play rather well within my existing workflow.
RW> This, and some armored cat5 that will tolerate being run
RW> outdoors and I'm in business. TWo of these and the
RW> requisite number of ada8000 boxes and I'm playing with quite enough
RW> channels. I've then only got comm on regular copper. I could sure
 RW> like that.

To further this discussion, Richard, there are quite a goodly number of
manufacturers of digital snakes. There are a wide variety of input and output
options and a wide variety of protocols/formats of digital outputs. But in my
present position as a commercial audio service technician and not actively
engaged in SR, I'd have to do some more intensive research on the various
brands to see what's offered. The quote that I put in above was from the
Behringer site... But there have been some quality questions about their gear
(aside from the numerous accusations of alleged patent infringements by
several manufacturers.)

I'm going to pose the question again for the folks that have just been linked
to the mailing list side: Options and opinions on both stand-alone and
purpose-built digital snakes for SR or recording. What's what on the market?
What's your experience with quality and/or limitations?

Best regards,
Marc
