 I always had the impression, that the purpose of such vaccinations was to
 get sick, so your body starts to make antibodies, that will be ready when
 the real thing comes along.

 In my youth I had a coctail against tropical diseases every 6 months and
 smallpox once a year. The cocktail was the great event, you would
 have a slight fever the next day and could clain to feel sick. The only
 way to skip school for one day.
