That sounds like Paper Moon (1973), a classic film starring
Tatum O'Neal and her father, Ryan O'Neal. In this movie, Tatum
plays a young girl named Addie, who forms an unlikely
partnership with an older con man named Moses Pray as they
travel across the Midwest during the Great Depression. They end
up in various adventures, including having milkshakes and
exploring different aspects of small-town America.

Another character who could fit the description of "another
girl" is Trixie Delight, played by Madeline Kahn, who also
becomes a part of their travels.
