I think I remember reading before, you use the web interface to access the
BBS?  Not telnet or ssh?

Another option may be to use an NNTP client if you wanted to try out another
interface.  I think NewsTap is the defacto standard for that on iPad:

I don't know off the top of my head whether The Rusty Mailbox has news feeds
available to the public.
