For me.. the first sense that anything connected people, was  
echomail.  Back then, even accessing the internet required  
dialup.  So, connecting to a BBS .vs. an ISP to browse or  
gopher made no difference.  The "internet" itself wasn't  
amazing to me.

Compuserve was another a-ha place for me; getting connected  
with people who had info to share or just enjoyed a good  
conversation.
