Left Hand of God, or Beat the Devil, maybe??  I have not seen the one where
he pretends to be a priest but I am aware of it.  IIRC, it was one of his
last.

I am not sure they had trouble with the ending (other than it did not at
all match what was in the book) but, at one point, they asked him who was
responsible for one of the deaths in the book.  He realized that he did
not know!  It turned out not to be significant to the overall storyline and
apparently remained unsolved when the book was completed.  :)
