I did not have to learn English. Being born in Canada, I grew up with it spoken all around me (neighbors, friends, the greater community, school, etc) and on tv. For the most part, my parents always spoke the native Latvian in the home and to me. However, it was always usually English with my older sibling; "I'm gonna kill you!" was a common phrase. I was the walking English dictionary (and how do you spell..) person for my mom. I had an A-ha! moment in the 4th grade, when I suddenly realized that Latvian-English was really just one single language to me. When I realized that I could speak either Latvian or English without having to think about either in advance, I wanted the same experience with French. But I was too old by then (as science also concludes) to develop that same assimilation. The spoken-Latvian scene in The Night Manager is brief. The accent is very Russified (forced, very Russian-sounding, poor articulation.) --- Thunderbird 2.0.0.24 (Windows/20100228) * Origin: nntp://rbb.fidonet.fi - Lake Ylo - Finland (2:221/360.0) SEEN-BY: 1/123 90/1 120/340 601 123/131 154/10 203/0 221/0 1 6 360 SEEN-BY: 226/16 30 227/114 702 229/101 424 426 664 1014 240/2100 5138 SEEN-BY: 240/5832 5853 249/206 317 400 280/464 5003 288/100 292/8125 SEEN-BY: 310/31 317/3 320/219 322/757 342/200 396/45 423/81 120 633/280 SEEN-BY: 770/1 2452/250 2454/119 PATH: 221/360 1 280/464 240/5832 229/426 |
