XPost: bc.politics, can.politics, ont.politics       XPost: ab.politics       From: ConsRCons@govt.cda              Another Harper Conservative rat scurries for cover before the RCMP can       lay charges. 'Another expected this week". Any bets it's going to be       another Harper appointee? I just hope this investigation proceeds       slowly . . . up until the 2015 election.               ^_^       __________________________________       Postmedia News - December 4, 2013                     Braley quits Senate, likely prompted by scandal              Tory officially provides no reason for sudden departure                     A Conservative senator from Ontario who owns two CFL teams, including       the B.C. Lions, has retired early from the upper chamber - a move that       may be a harbinger of things to come.              David Braley provided no reason for his departure, which was effective       Nov. 30. The 72-year-old wasn't scheduled to retire until 2016.              But Braley was apparently fed up with the Senate scandal, telling a       hometown newspaper in September it had tainted anyone who sits in the       red chamber.              A longtime businessman from Hamilton, Ont., Braley told the Hamilton       Community News that his wife had asked him to consider retiring early.       He also said in the interview that the actions of senators Mike Duffy,       Patrick Brazeau and Pamela Wallin, as well as of former Liberal senator       Mac Harb, had made him rethink his place in the upper chamber.              The first three have been suspended over spending irregularities; Harb       retired from the Senate earlier this year. The RCMP has been looking       into some senators' expenses, and into the repayment of Duffy's expenses       by Nigel Wright, who at the time was the prime minister's chief of staff.              Conservatives in the upper chamber told reporters Tuesday they believed       Braley had left to spend more time with his family - echoing a statement       he gave to the Hamilton Spectator. Conservative Senate leader Claude       Carignan said he didn't believe that Braley's departure stemmed from the       state of affairs in the Senate.              Carignan said he didn't foresee anyone resigning from the upper chamber       in the days or weeks to come.              But at least one other Conservative senator is expected to resign from       the upper chamber during the coming weeks, according to Senate sources.       Sources say that others in the caucus have mused about leaving their       posts early, believing they have been painted with the same brush as       Duffy, Wallin, Brazeau and Harb.              The Tory caucus in the Senate has been discontented for months over the       spending scandal and a political whipping from the House of Commons for       standing up and gutting a Conservative backbencher's bill forcing unions       to disclose whom they give money to.              Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed Braley to the Senate in 2010,       giving a patronage appointment to a top Conservative donor and backer.       Braley's departure leaves nine vacant seats in the Senate. By the time       the next election rolls around, expected in 2015, there are scheduled to       be seven more retirements.                     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~               βIt is horrifying that we have to fight our own government to save       the environment.β β Ansel Adams              ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
