   They ate the contents of seal's guts for vegetable matter.   
   But just as many seals died that way (or more) so why can   
   they not sell the pelts?   
      
   It provides an economic basis for keeping the wild environment   
   intact, as opposed to digging it all up and leaving poison mine   
   tailings everywhere. I do think that "farmed" fur is both   
   inferior and wasteful, but trapping and killing wild animals   
   is right and good IFF it maintains the species and environment   
   intact. "Happy Meat" tastes better and is better for animals   
   with canines like us.
