Educated. Well-spoken. Demanding of the Harper government for
important things like education for his people.
But that wasn't enough for the many of the demanding people he led. Now
watch what we get in his place . . . we're going to go back to the days
of native standoffs and barricades and physical confrontations. And
it's the natives who are going to be the biggest losers.

Shawn Atleo's abrupt resignation as AFN chief shocks social media

Shawn Atleo's resignation as national chief of the Assembly of First
Nations sent shockwave through social media Friday afternoon, but the
aboriginal community and observers are divided over his legacy and what
his departure means to First Nations.

Atleo, elected to a second term as national chief less than two years
ago, made the announcement Friday afternoon at a news conference in
Ottawa. His sudden departure created so much social media buzz that his
name became a trending topic in Canada on Twitter.

Atleo's announcement came as a surprise to many. There was little
indication of his plan, according to CBC Aboriginal reporter Connie Walker.

However, troubles have been brewing for Atleo both in Ottawa and on
social media. Bill C-33, the Harper government's First Nations education
bill, created much division among aboriginal chiefs, and Atleo's public
endorsement of the controversial bill has led to calls for his ouster on
   social media.

His critics have adopted the hashtag #ImpeachAtleo — launched by Mi'kmaq
lawyer Pam Palmater who lost to Atleo during the last election — to
   voice their dissatisfaction.

Derek Nepinak, the Grand Chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, was
in Ottawa this week denouncing the proposed First Nations Education Act,
and Atleo's support of the bill. But today, he sent Atleo his well wishes.

Atleo's supporters, including those who have personally met with him,
say his departure means a loss for the aboriginal community.

   Critics cheered his departure.
