   ============
   Both city names refer to local bends in rivers rather than their
   positions within the state, and those bends happen to lie in opposite
   halves of Oregon.

   Key facts and chronology

       South Bend (Lincoln County) sits on the north bank of the lower
   Umpqua River where the river makes a pronounced turn toward the ocean.
   Early settlers and mapmakers named that settlement for the “south bend”
   of the river’s course relative to local orientation.
       North Bend (Coos County) sits at the north side of the Coos Bay inlet
   where the bay/river makes a notable bend; the town was named for the
   “north bend” of that waterway (or a northward bend in the bay/Coos River
   complex).
       Both towns were named in the 19th century by people describing nearby
   river/bay geometry, not by reference to the state’s cardinal directions.
   Because Oregon’s coastline curves and river courses run in many
   directions, a “north” or “south” bend can occur far from the geographic
   center or edges of the state.
