Interestingly enough, the Brooklyn neighborhood I grew up in during the 60's
   onward
was basically the epicenter of the Mafia.
We would see the old men playing bocce ball, or sitting outside their social
   club
playing cards, and as kids we had no idea who they really were. We learned
   later, but
it didn't matter because they weren't interested in the average person.
They would give us candy or a soda on a hot day and so forth and nothing
   happened
in this neighborhood because even the perps were smart enough not to cause
   trouble
lest they end up at the bottom of The Narrows in a cement tuxedo.
