|    LIRR bankruptcy/accident aftermath    |
|    14 Jul 14 10:48:41    |
Around 1950, the LIRR suffered two very bad accidents. At that time it was in       bankruptcy and under the control of court assigned trustees.              Would anyone know what happened after that to fix the many problems of the       LIRR? From reading old newspaper articles, it seems there was a lot of finger       pointing, but no one wanted to take responsibility. Gov Dewey of NY State was       not interested. The        towns served didn't want to ease onerous property taxes. Commuters demanded       fares be kept ridiculously low. yet somehow the line managed to buy new cars       and make other improvements before the MTA took over.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
