I don't know of any books specifically on that route, but books on overall New
York Central history touch on the background.

I believe the trackage was elevated in the 1930s, and freights ceased using it
   in the 1980s.

I remain surprised that it's not used for freight deliveries today, given the
bad congestion of NYC and suburban roads. Obviously, the freight would be a
different mixture than that of the past, but there still are an enormous
   amount of trucks coming
   into the city.

If the Penna Station tunnels could handle freight*, I bet they'd be heavilly
   utilized for that overnight.

*They've tried it. The grades are too steep and couplers break.
