The R-O-W now runs through people's living rooms because of the "we
don't need no stinkin' railroads in the city" era and NY Central's
need to sell the properties leading to what I refer to as "loft
properties" no matter how funky and inappropriate. My niece lived in
one in Manhattan (lower 30s off 5th Avenue) where there was no level
floor or 90-degree wall corner in any room.

How much railroad street or elevated running is there left in
Manhattan or Brooklyn other than legacy subway and commuter lines? I
was appalled to see how much of the LIRR Bay Ridge Branch (now the
NY&A) near where I grew up in ENY was decimated as far back as 20
   years ago.

We transit/railfans are a very small minority. The average New Yorker
wouldn't know a freight train if it ran over them.
