This opened last night, with photos of the construction of the bridge and   
   other items, such as a piece of cable.   
      
   Gay Talese's book of 50 years ago will be reissued.   
      
   I took a look at the Power Broker book to see what Caro had to say.  He did   
   not have a specific chapter on the Vz, but included it with other material.    
   Basically, it pointed out the 1955 agreement between PANY and TBTA to get   
   federal money by building a    
   highway system.     
      
   Caro says the money could've been instead to upgrade the transit network,   
   which in 1974 was in terrible shape.  I'm not sure Caro is accurate since   
   bridge money is profitable--the tolls make a profit and can retire the bonds.    
   Subway and trains require a    
   subsidy to operate, so the bond issues would have to be repaid by the city and   
   state, a hefty liability (NJ of late has a terrible bond rating).
