   In 1980 I had a few days in Chicago and rode the "L" taking pictures   
   out the railfan windows in the head end car.  When I mentioned where I   
   went to a friend who grew up there she said "Oh My God, you didn't go   
   THERE, did you?"  I had no problems.   
      
   On several trips to NY in the late 80s I wanted to ride the IRT New   
   Lots line in ENY where I grew up and my then-sister-in-law was very   
   alarmed that I wanted to go into that neighborhood while no comment   
   was made about my riding the BMT Canarsie line through the adjoining   
   neighborhoods to Canarsie where my mom lived.   
      
   On my last trip to NY in 2007 I passed up the IRT opportunity but did   
   ride the BMT to Canarsie with another NY-based subway fan.  Again, no   
   problems.
