Back in 1962, was the Belt Parkway a very slow road (heavy traffic) as it is
   today?

I don't know what's worse--slogging along the Belt Pkwy or using local streets
in Brooklyn. Unfortunately, some destinations in Queens and Long Island are
not near a train and driving is necessary. Though one time I came over the
   GWB and Throngs Neck
Br to Long Island and made good time; another time I used the Triborough and
   GWB and also did well.

Returning to the bridge, I like the tower design of the Triborough much better
than the austere design of the Vz, ThNk, and BxWh bridges.
