|    1964 World's Fair--Caro & Moses    |
|    11 Dec 14 16:08:18    |
This year had many celebrations and publications on the 50th anniversary of       the fair. It seemed overwhelmingly that people had fond memories of it.              But to read Caro's book on Moses, one would think the fair was a disaster,       with grossly overcharged admission and fees and rents to cover Moses well paid       political buddies, and a great absence of exhibitors thanks to Moses being       such an SOB and chasing        everyone away.              Caro says Moses refused to impose any architectural standards with a chaotic       result, but IIRC, the fair had a great deal of innovative modern architecture       by its exhibtors, such as IBM's Selectric typefont.              I wonder if, when Caro's book originally came out in 1974, if readers noticed       the discrepancy between Caro's version and their own memories of only ten       years earlier.              I don't believe the Columbia exhibits of a few years ago touched on the fair       issues, nor do I recall reading any discussion of Caro's comments.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
