IIRC, it never went beyond a       drawing. I guess that they never even built a prototype.              I saw on Google Images a picture of the proposed M9, which doesn't look       that much different from the M7/7a. I also understood that that those       trains will only carry the model number M9 throughout the MTA, and that       there will be no M9A.              > I had one ride on the M8's last spring. They are surprisingly rough       > riders, rough enough to shake the fillings right out of your teeth!              Yes, I have had a couple of rides on the M8s when I visited New York.       They weigh a tonne and a half, in relative terms, and you can definitely       feel it.              > The       > M2's I rode on the way back gave a much smoother ride.       >              M2s were likely the best of any trains on Metro-North. I have heard       engineers time and again praise them for their very good construction,       their reliability as well as their MDBFs.              I will be very sorry to see the M2s go as they, IMHO, were truly the       workhorse of Metro-North's fleet. They were like a reliable and good       friend.              I also find the M2s to be much more aesthetically pleasing than the M8s,       which are plain ugly in comparison.              The M8 also does nothing in terms of air streaming, whereas with the       M2/4/6, they at least pretended to make an effort.              The same applies with the M7/7A, with those vents sticking out they they       do. That certainly cannot help with airstreaming, and hopefully the M9s       will have that feature removed.              BTW, is the M7 or M9 body design set for use as a DMU in New York State       and Oregon? I ask, because I saw a picture on Google Images of one that       has received approval for that purpose by the FRA.              http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p125/Dutchrailnut/Railroading       BombardierDMU.jpg              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
